Does Weather Affect Joint Pain?

Many people suffer from increased pain levels in their joint’s when the weather changes for the worse. It is thought that the changes in the barometric pressure can cause expansion and contraction of tendons, muscles, bones and scar tissues resulting in increase in pain or increased levels of pain.

How Weather May Affect Joints:

One theory is that people with arthritis may be sensitive to changes in barometric pressure. When the cartilage that cushions the bones inside a joint is worn away, nerves that are exposed might pick up on changes in pressure. Another thought is that the changes in barometric pressure could make your muscles, tendons and any scar tissue expand and contract, which can cause pain in joints that are affected by arthritis. Low temperatures can make the fluid inside joints thicker, so they feel stiffer.

Additionally, when the weather is miserable and rainy you tend to stay indoors, and this lack of movement and exercise for your joints can cause them to become stiff and painful.

How To Ease Weather-Related Joint Pain

  • When the weather starts to take a turn for the worse, try to keep yourself warm. Take a hot shower or bath and make sure you wear layers to keep yourself warm.
  • See a doctor about pain medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce any discomfort.
  • It is important to keep active and maintain a healthy weight. Try exercises such as swimming or yoga and slowly increase the amount of exercise you do to help build up muscle and the strength of your bones. Visit the Swimming.org website for more details about why swimming is good for arthritis: https://www.swimming.org/justswim/exercises-for-arthritis/
  • Try and avoid heavy lifting at all costs as this could cause potential pain in the future.
  • It is also important to let your body rest and reset. Make sure that you are eating enough and getting a good amount of sleep.
