We all know that doing our bit for the environment is sensible and does make a difference. There’s the obvious such as having better insulation in our homes and the more expensive such as having solar panels and new bathroom toilets that only half flush, but what about the quick wins we can do that can actually have a big impact as well?

Here are some quirky quick wins you can implement in and around your home without spending a fortune and breaking the bank!

Household Cleaners

When you next buy household cleaners swapping to sprays rather than aerosols and looking for environmentally friendly cleaners will help reduce air pollution both in your home and outside. A great tip when looking to change is to look at the ingredients on the back of the product and see if they are plant-based.

Veggie for a day

This may be hard for a household that has a regular diet of meat and 2 veg at mealtimes, but becoming a veggie for a day each week, if you’re a family of four, has the same impact as driving a hybrid car! It sounds mad but it’s true simply because raising livestock increases greenhouses gases. If you need some inspiration why not take a look at the BBC Good Food site where they have plenty of tasty vegetarian menus to tease your taste buds.

Curtain Material

If you’re redecorating a room now could be the time to change your curtains. You can now buy curtains made from thermal material which will help keep your room warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Technology, even for curtains, never stands still!

Water Butts

Simple but obvious. If you’re a keen gardener using a natural harvest of water is a great way to keep your garden green. If you’re on a water meter this could also help save you money as well. If you’re worried about unsightly green water butts spoiling the look of your garden check out these great contemporary water tank designs which are very pleasing to the eye.

Bulb upgrade

If you haven’t yet made the change, the next time you need to buy light bulbs make sure you opt for environmentally green ones. Technology has helped improve the look and brightness so that nowadays you can barely notice the difference.

Recycle and make a profit!

We all know that recycling household rubbish is the right thing to do but what about all those old toys and clothes that your family may have outgrown or no longer use? Instead of throwing them away or taking to the tip why not sell them? After all one person’s rubbish is another’s treasure! You’ll be surprised at just how much you can sell or even give away to someone that will make good use of the things you no longer need. There are some great online selling sites such as EBay and Facebay where you can advertise for free.
