Men’s Denim Shirt – in or out?

The denim shirt, in recent years, has had a revival and is now a staple in most men’s wardrobes. If you’re still not convinced, here’s some top tips on which style to use, what colour to wear and how to dress your denim shirt.

There are plenty of style choices to choose from. From heavy, thick, baggy denim to lightweight fitted shirts, there are plenty of options available depending on the look you are trying to create and, of course, your body shape. It’s important to make sure that even if you are opting for the baggy look, you still choose the correct size and don’t buy a size or two bigger. If you do, the result will look like you’re drowning in denim rather than styling your denim. Fitted denim shirts that are made from lightweight cotton look great under tailored suits and casual jackets.

Many people avoid the denim on denim look to make sure they don’t make a fashion faux pas! But when worn correctly with a great pair of men’s designer jeans, the denim-on-denim outfit can be a great addition to your wardrobe. If you’re planning to make this fashion statement, it’s best to avoid blending your denim colours on your top and bottom half. Make sure they contrast; maybe opt for black jeans and then a denim washed-look shirt. In the summer, a great look is to pair white jeans with a light blue denim shirt.

Your choices are endless when looking at how to dress your denim shirt. For casual outfits, a pair of chinos with loafers is an absolute fool-proof option. If you’re feeling more daring, why not pair your denim shirt with a suit? I know it does push the boundaries for many of us, but this look really does look smart when chosen carefully. Don’t worry, we’re not talking denim suits. Instead, choose a dark coloured slim fit denim shirt and wear with your suit. If you’d also like to add a tie, make sure your shirt choice has a cutaway collar. Choosing a shirt made from chambray which is a finer, lighter and thinner material will make you feel more comfortable and not so bulky. Chambray is not denim as such, but it is closely related. Chambray is made from a simple weave whereas denim is traditionally made from a double-threaded twill. An alternative option is to wear your denim shirt with a blazer to give you a smart casual look. A thin classic cotton blazer or even a linen blazer paired with chinos or jeans will lift your outfit. There are plenty of style choices for your denim shirt, from open necked to button-down collars. Browse your style and choose a design that makes you feel comfortable.

And finally, why not use layers in your outfit to enhance and lift your denim shirt? Add a turtleneck sweater underneath your shirt or even a waistcoat on top and, for smart suits, a handkerchief in your top pocket will go down a treat.
