Does social media still matter for businesses?

Love it or loathe it, social media has had a huge impact on the world in the last decade. It goes far deeper than selfies, likes and followers however – platforms such as Facebook and Instagram have become a valuable tool for every type of business from sole traders to multi-million pound corporations.

With so many brands using social media however, it’s a competitive market so is it even worth the effort?

Yes, if you care what your customers wantshutterstock_1007409766

The number of social media users has now surpassed the four billion mark according to the 2018 Global Digital suite of reports from We Are Social and Hootsuite – https://wearesocial.com/blog/2018/01/global-digital-report-2018. The fact that there are so many people using these sites isn’t necessarily the important part however – the bit that really matters to businesses is that more people follow brands on social media than celebrities.

On Instagram alone, 80% of users follow at least one brand. What this tells us is that if you’re not using social, you’re not only missing out on an effective way of reaching almost half the world’s population, you’re also ignoring what your customers want.

Increase brand awareness

It seems obvious that you’re going to reach new audiences when you have three billion people using social media. Many companies remain cynical about the effectiveness of social however because just because you have a profile, it doesn’t guarantee that you’re going to get any business out of it.

This is of course true but when executed well, social media can prove to be invaluable. According to figures published on Facebook Business, (https://www.facebook.com/business/goals/build-awareness) 60% of Instagram users say they discover new products via the platform. What’s more, people are more likely to purchase from a company they feel connected to and social media is a quick, inexpensive and effective way to do this.

Show your human sideshutterstock_684202240

Did you know that more than half of adults in the UK don’t trust a brand until they see ‘real-world proof’ that the brand is keeping its promises?

In order to connect with existing and potential customers, it’s absolutely crucial that you show the human side of your brand. The ability to create real and meaningful connections is one of the key benefits of social media for businesses. You can do this by introducing your followers to the people who work for your company and by showcasing how existing customers are using and benefiting from your products or services.

It’s great for SEO

Companies may think that the main benefit of using social media is to reach out to as many customers as possible. This is of course true because the more people that know about you, the more sales you’re likely to make.

Social media has another hidden benefit however and it’s an important one. The likes of Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter are fantastic for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Why exactly is this however?
